CENTRO TE VEO

A women's empowerment center in La Canita, Dominican republic

CENTRO TE VEO STORY

In April 2016, we started to build Centro Te Veo!  By the end of 2017 we will have Phase One completed and the women of La Canita will have a roof, four walls, and a concrete floor to meet in, work in, and create in.

The women of La Canita currently meet and work in a small shack that they have rented with their own money for the last two years.  They are currently leading the build of Centro Te Veo in the DR alongside our US based Build Team.

The personal development, products, and work they have been able to do in the tiny space has been inspiring.  In the last few years they have worked with Freedom Collective International to create the Te Veo Jewely line and will continue to work in this tiny rented space until Centro Te Veo's basic construction is complete.

When the co-op meets they will often go to a dirt lot that is covered by corrugated tin so that they can all work together even if it rains.

Centro Te Veo will provide more room for them to meet out of the rain, securely store their jewelry making and sewing supplies, and the means to implement new business ideas to make the center locally sustainable.  We also see this center as a place to reach out to their community and beyond with the good news that we are all SEEN by the Living God.  We envision educational classes (English and computers), youth meetings, more cooperative work for jewelry design and sales, and parties for the whole community.   Investing in Centro Te Veo is investing in the empowerment of women.  It is amazing what happens when women come together for the good of their families and communities.

CENTRO TE VEO VISION

REstored relationships, creative empowerment, generous living

Project I See You empowers women by focusing on emotional, relational, and spiritual health.  This will also be the foundation of Centro Te Veo.  Project I See You, La Canita is based on restored relationships with God, self, and others.  This foundation is what the woman’s jewelry making and sewing is built on.  Unity and collaboration is what will sustain their efforts to build a more financially stable life.

Connecting to beauty and creativity has been a part of our work in La Canita since the beginning.  It began with construction paper and glitter years ago.  And now the women are selling their crafts to support their hope of a building to continue their jewelry development.  In 2016 we will partner with International Freedom Collective to further their artistry, teamwork, and sales.

Even as we hope for building, we also have a vision of Centro Te Veo being a launching pad for more women to be reached in neighboring communities, Haiti, and beyond.  The women of La Canita have already reached out to a neighboring community, Redimido, and several have expressed interest in going to Haiti when we go again.

Centro Te Veo Plans

Below Lizzy gives a guided tour of the structure in October 2016.

Below are the floor plans and models for Phase 1.  We are currently building the basic shell and interior walls, plumbing, and electrical.  Fixtures and finishes will be a part of future Immersion Trips, Build Trips, and done with local volunteers.  We are utilizing all our resources and including local involvement as much as possible.

Phase 2 and 3 will include the build out of the second floor for secure roof space and then eventually a second floor finish with two bedrooms, a full bath, a kitchen, and living space for housing those in need of shelter from domestic violence or needing extra care after illness or the birth of a baby.

Centro Te Veo Testimonials

The women in La Canita were interviewed about why a community center is important to them. Hear firsthand what they have to say.
